Although the modern-day art of bonsai originated in China more than two thousand years ago, pictures of trees grown in pots have been found in Egyptian Tombs dated over 4000 years old.  It was introduced to Japan during the 7^th – 9^th century and Japanese “tray gardening” has continued to grow in popularity.  A bonsai tree is not a genetically dwarfed plant.  Bonsai is the art of dwarfing trees or plants and developing them into an aesthetically appealing shape by growing, pruning and training them in containers, adhering to precise techniques.  A true bonsai tree is as healthy as a tree growing in the wild.
